What Is Alopecia
Common Causes of Alopecia
Immune system attacks hair follicles and other skin tissues; possibly hereditary
Most advanced; total hair loss all over the body; must take special precautions from bacteria getting into eyes, nasal cavity, etc.
Auto-immune disorder resulting in total scalp hair loss; there are two ways hair is lost–quick and complete hair loss on the scalp, and patchy hair loss that turns into total hair loss on the scalp
No hair growth at all; different than alopecia in that hair is never grown, as opposed to grown and lost
Hair follicles are lost prematurely due to stress or illness
A disease that irritates the mouth and skin, leading to permanent hair loss
Thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone; hair loss is uniformly over the entire scalp, and appears sparse all over
Thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone; hair loss is uniformly over the entire scalp, and appears sparse all over
Both the stress on the body and the hormone changes that occur during quick and dramatic weight loss can attribute to hair loss
Hair loss is commonly associated with cancer patients or individuals undergoing chemotherapy; however, hair loss can occur under a multitude of medications; certain antidepressants, antibiotics, antifungal medications, and birth controls can result in hair loss
Medical treatment options can cause significant hair loss; however, typically these treatments only cause loss on the area that’s being treated, and it usually is temporary (depending on severity and duration of treatment)
For people with PCOS, their body can produce too much of the male hormone, that can lead to excess body hair and decreased scalp hair
